About

Site and Situation is a new curatorial studio course, within UNSW Art & Design’s innovative Masters of Curating and Cultural Leadership programme. Students are drawn from Australia and internationally, and have a wide range of experience: from working in ARIs and commercial galleries, to those interested in the intersection of arts, creative producing, and management. The course is led by curator and artist Julie Louise Bacon, and draws on her experience directing arts organisations, festival programmes and public art works in the UK, Canada, and Europe.

Site and Situation is an opportunity to develop practical experience and critical understanding of curation in non-traditional arts space. Beyond the white cube, the course looks at the creation of art events as situations, propositions in spaces such as historical houses, parks, former industrial sites, malls and city streets, to give a few examples. Students both explore the context of practice and produce public events, building skills, networks and experience in the public domain and cultural field.
